Do you work hard and want to get ahead? Perhaps you want to get a promotion that moves you up the chain, have a greater impact on the success of your team or company, or just get out of the shadows at work.
Look around you. Are the hardest working and most knowledgeable people in your organization seen as leadership material? Are the most technically savvy in positions of respect and authority? Do people who work smart and hard, but keep their heads down, get acknowledged? At most companies the answer is probably a resounding and emphatic NO.
If you want to move ahead in your career, the bottom line is you must demonstrate that you provide a unique value greater than your peers.
You must overcome the inertia or tradition regarding promotions and take on new and greater responsibilities. If you are younger, have been at the company for a brief time, or have not built up sufficient goodwill, your promotion may go to the person with whom the hiring manager is most familiar, even if you would be a better choice.
